HCC Embedded (HCC), specialists in software for securely storing and communicating embedded data, has extended the range of platforms supported within its Advanced Embedded Framework to include the ChibiOS real time operating system (RTOS).

Developers of ChibiOS-based designs can now leverage HCC’s suite of middleware

Embedded developers can now add HCC Embedded’s communications, security, and flash file system software to a variety of complex ChibiOS-based designs to reduce time to market and improve product reliability.

“ChibiOS is a compact and flexible pre-emptive embedded RTOS, freely available under a GPL license and is widely used on many 32-bit embedded MCUs,” said Giovanni Di Sirio, developer of ChibiOS. “As with many embedded systems, the challenge for developers is to achieve high performance and verifiable quality while guaranteeing reliable operation. HCC’s focus on reliability and quality ensures this can be achieved in even the most complex areas of any application.”

“Many embedded software components fail to provide sufficient quality assurance,” said HCC Embedded CEO Dave Hughes. “For example, numerous file systems and flash management software products fall short of ensuring the reliable and safe storage of data, and a number of network stacks on the market are vulnerable to security risks and denial-of-service attacks. To help customers avoid such problems, HCC enables them to augment their chosen RTOS with high-quality embedded components that are fully documented and supported by the team that developed them. This is critical for building cost-effective and reliable products.”

HCC middleware is designed to be independent and portable, meaning that it works with any embedded processor and provides support for any RTOS or scheduler. HCC’s networking and storage solutions include TCP/IPv4 and IPv6 networking stacks; CryptoCore security; and MQTT, SNMP, and TLS/DTLS software modules, all of which are developed with rigorous MISRA adherence.

HCC’s range of high-performance, fail-safe file systems and Flash Translation Layer (FTL) solutions guarantee the integrity of the file system and its data while managing any type of flash media such as NAND, NOR, and eMMC. With this range of commercial peripherals and software components, designers can choose the components they need and put them together in a reliable and consistent way to build a variety of ChibiOS-based products to the same, high-quality standard every time.

STMicroelectronics launches ultra-low-power Sigfox Monarch-ready solution
STMicroelectronics says it is the first chip maker to develop and market a certified solution for seamless global, ultra-low-power, and long-range wireless IoT connectivity enabling the Monarch worldwide tracking and positioning service from Sigfox, a lead IoT service provider. ST’s solution lets users create region-independent smart objects that connect automatically to the local Sigfox network anywhere in the world, empowering inter-regional mobility, geolocation, and asset tracking without relying on more expensive GPS or GNSS positioning devices. These could include smart-baggage products that aid tracking in airports or transport hubs, or innovations for supply-chain management and air or rail transportation in the industrial asset-management market, such as smart pallets. Regional independence also allows makers of connected smart objects such as consumer or commercial IoT devices to standardise products for multiple export markets, simplifying manufacturing and logistics. ST is providing a complete Software Development Kit (SDK) that runs on STM32, for Sigfox Monarch networking, supported by development kits, reference designs, and tools that accelerate project completion. The fully certified Sigfox Monarch solution is based on ST’s S2-LP ultra-low-power, long-range, sub-1GHz radio, which is automatically tuned on the local regional Sigfox frequency band, across all relevant worldwide zones (RC1 to RC6), enabling seamless connectivity to the Global Sigfox network and geolocation services. For processing demanding applications, the ARM Cortex-M4 based devices are said to enable efficient data pre-processing and localised AI, reducing network traffic requirements. To jump-start new product development, ST’s S2-LP radio is also available for the STM32 Open Development Environment (ODE) with X-NUCLEO-S2868A1/-S2915A1 (upcoming in late Q4’18) expansion boards and X-CUBE-SFXS2LP1 Sigfox Ready software expansion pack. The SDK also supports a dual-radio reference solution powered by the S2-LP and BlueNRG-2 Bluetooth low energy SoC, design to offer easy in-field provisioning, maintenance and configuration of the device through a convenient smartphone app. The design can be enhanced with the STSAFE secure element for robust cyber-protection and with ST’s comprehensive industrial portfolio of motion and environmental MEMS sensors.

Renesas and BlackBerry deliver R-Car based development environment
Renesas Electronics is expanding its partnership to offer an integrated virtualisation functional safety and secure development environment for the Renesas R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) devices. Using BlackBerry’s QNX software, it was developed as part of the companies’ ongoing strategic relationship to advance autonomous and connected driving technology. The development environment is an expansion of Renesas’ software package lineup for the R-Car automotive computing platform. It allows automotive cockpit system designers to quickly develop advanced cockpit systems and improve the user experience. The development environment is based on the Renesas R-Car family and features BlackBerry's QNX Software Development Platform 7.0 and QNX Hypervisor 2.0 virtualisation software. It also provides access to the set of software products developed by BlackBerry, allowing designers to leverage the multimedia and HMI-related software for cockpit graphics systems development. The development environment takes full advantage of the virtualisation functions available in Renesas R-Car devices, says Renesas. This contributes to building functionally safe digital cockpit systems by isolating functions such as cluster and navigation, thereby ensuring that a fault in one area cannot corrupt another. The QNX Hypervisor 2.0 allows disparate guest operating systems such as Android and Linux to execute independently on a single R-Car device. The demand for highly reliable, fully integrated hardware and software is rapidly increasing in markets like China, where there is a need for the fastest possible development velocity in connected transportation, says Renesas. Moving forward, Renesas and BlackBerry will continue to accelerate their development of integrated cockpit systems and connected car systems, while strengthening their joint efforts for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and full-scale Electronic Control Unit (ECU) integration.
