According to the report of DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, the Enterprise SSD market has been expanding in recent years driven by the development of data center, AI, big data, 5G, and edge computing. The shipments of Enterprise SSD are expected to reach 30 million units this year, up from less than 20 million units in 2016. The year-on-year bit shipment growth of Enterprise SSD has been over 50% since 2016, showing the strongest growth momentum among all NAND Flash applications. The rapid growth is expected to continue in the next three years.

With regard to the market situation in 2Q18, the demand for Enterprise SSD from server and data center is expected to rebound significantly compared with 1Q18. However, “the oversupply will continue in NAND Flash market, where suppliers face the pressure to consume production capacity”, says Alan Chen, research director at DRAMeXchange. Therefore, the average contract price of Enterprise PCIe SSD and Enterprise SATA SSD may fall by 10% or more in 2Q18.

On the other hand, some suppliers of Enterprise SSD have applied aggressive price strategies to win more orders from OEMs and to acquire higher market share. This strategy will also help them lay the foundation for entering the promising Enterprise SSD market in the future. The adoption of the latest 64/72-layer 3D-NAND, which is more cost-competitive, is the main reason why these suppliers managed to implement the price war strategy.

In 3Q18, the NAND Flash market has a chance to see slight undersupply, driven by the demand for Enterprise SSD, Client SSD and smartphones. However, the competition among Enterprise SSD suppliers will become increasingly fierce. Therefore, the prices of Enterprise SSD are very likely to continue decreasing in the third quarter.

Chen notes that, key suppliers like Intel, Samsung, Micron, Toshiba, SK Hynix, etc. have already sent their latest 64/72-layer 3D-SSD products to main clients for test. The suppliers have also entered the mass production of these products, making the market competition more intense this year.

In addition, Purely, Intel's next-generation platform, will see faster penetration this year and become the mainstream of market, so most manufacturers have invested much of their R&D resources on PCIe interface-related products this year. Although some suppliers have plans to launch 3D-QLC SSD products in 2018, but will not see noticeable shipments until 1H19 at the soonest, considering the progress of R&D and the time needed by clients to test the products.

China’s semiconductor challenge
Semiconductors are what has sustained exports of Korean products and the economy. The chip front is shaking amid challenges from Chinese rivals backed by Beijing’s ambition to master and localize the semiconductor production industry. China’s antitrust agency embarked on a price-fixing probe into Korea’s three dominant chipmakers — Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron. The probe is a clear nationalistic effort to victimize foreign makers and promote China’s local industry. China has been obsessively pursuing semiconductors. The Beijing government has set up a fund in the scale of 300 billion yuan ($47 billion) to promote the semiconductor industry, according to a Wall Street Journal report. China is the world’s biggest consumer of semiconductors but imports make up nearly 90 percent, resulting in a deficit of $200 billion a year for that category alone. China envisions upping its localization level to 70 percent from its current 10 percent by 2025. To meet its 2025 initiative to make the country a technology and innovation powerhouse, semiconductors are essential. President Xi Jinping is encouraging the government and corporations to recruit as many top-caliber brains and engineers as possible. If China succeeds in localizing its semiconductor production, Korean exports could feel the effects. Last year, China was responsible for a fourth of Korea’s outbound shipments, of which nearly 80 percent were intermediary goods like semiconductors, displays and chemicals. In chips alone, 40 percent of Korean exports head to China. To make matters worse, the Trump administration is flagging trade tariffs on imported automobiles, which could result in hefty tariffs of up to 25 percent as it did on steel imports.Yet, there is no export replacement that can compensate for the expected loss in our mainstays of semiconductors and automobiles. While the domestic economy has been losing its vitality due to conflicting and experimental policies, dangers are building up fast on the Korean trade front.

Wearables Growth Slows
Growth in shipments of wearable devices slowed in the first quarter of the year amid a shift in buying away from basic wearables to smarter devices, according to market research firm IDC.First quarter wearables shipments reached 25.1 million units, an increase of 1.2 percent compared with the year-ago quarter, IDC (Framingham, Mass.) said. The growth rate was significantly lower than the 18 percent year-over-year growth rate that wearables notched in the first quarter of 2017, according to the firm.IDC said shipments of basic wearables declined by 9.2 percent year-over-year. At the same time, shipments of higher priced wearables from Apple, Fitbit and numerous fashion brands increased by 28.4 percent, IDC said, continuing a shift in consumer preferences toward smarter devices."With the move towards smarter devices, we're also starting to see hints of where the wearables market is headed," said Jitesh Ubrani, a senior mobile device research analyst at IDC, in a press statement.Ubrani said the incorporation of more sensors, years of underlying data and improved algorithms are enabling companies like Apple and Fitbit to help identify diseases and other health irregularities. Nearly one third of all wearables shipped in the first quarter included cellular connectivity, allowing new use cases to emerge, he added.Watches and wristbands accounted for 95 percent of wearables shipments in the first quarter, IDC said. Shipments of sensor-laden clothing — including step counting shoes, shirts, shorts and other items — increased by 58.6 percent year-over-year, according to IDC.
